Art & Design Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject that encourages children to learn to think creatively to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team. At Sky, our provision ensures every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to shine regardless of age, gender or ability. We aim to, wherever possible, create cross-curricular links to other subjects as this gives the learning purpose and relevance to the children.

The D&T Association have further outlined the aims as follows: "Design and Technology education helps develop children’s skills through collaborative working and problem-solving, and knowledge in design, materials, structures, mechanisms and electrical control. They are encouraged to be creative and innovative, and are actively encouraged to think about important issues such as sustainability and enterprise.”

We want to nurture our children into becoming successful innovators and effective risk-takers

Computing

Technology is at the forefront of a rapidly changing world and our intent at Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery is to allow our children to embrace computational thinking and creative problem solving in order for them to become confident, active and safe participants in our digital world.

Our computing curriculum is centred around computer science and ensures that our children are taught the principles of information, computation, programming and how digital systems work. Through the study of computing, the children are able to develop their problem-solving abilities, inventiveness and resourcefulness: skills that benefit their learning across a wide scope of subjects and situations.

It is our intention that our children will develop a respect for technology and most importantly, understand how to keep themselves safe in an ever-changing digital world. We aim to ensure that pupils embrace technology and are able to confidently and responsibly express themselves and communicate their ideas. In order to be confident, responsible users of technology, e-safety is an aspect of our curriculum that is always a priority. Our first step each year and each term is to ensure that e-safety is understood and developed alongside the children’s learning of technology to make sure that our children remain safe, respectful and responsible users of technology.st)

English

Reading and Phonics

At Sky Primary & Eden Project Nursery, we consider reading and writing to be essential life skills not only for academic success but also as a means of enriching our lives through reading for pleasure and writing creatively. Reading and writing thread their way through our Sky curriculum, binding skills together for a richer learning experience.

We aim to nurture a love for writing, equipping our pupils with the knowledge and skills needed to write as authors across our wide and varied curriculum. Through regular and purposeful writing opportunities, we strive for pupils to:

  • Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
  • Acquire a wide vocabulary, and a solid understanding of grammar and punctuation.
  • Be able to spell new words by effectively applying the spelling patterns and rules they learn throughout their time in primary school.
  • Take pride in the presentation of their writing, in part by developing a good, joined, handwriting style.
  • Refine and edit their writing, independently identifying their own areas for improvement and editing their work effectively during and after the writing process.

We help our children to develop the habit of reading for pleasure, to read easily, fluently and with understanding. We offer an environment enriched in vocabulary so that they are able to confidently and clearly express themselves. Our Great Works events include presentations, debate, discussion, and other speaking and listening activities to develop our children's articulacy, confidence, and communication skills.

Read Write Inc. - Christ Church Hanham Primary School

At Sky Primary Academy and Eden Project Nursery, we use the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics programme designed by Ruth Miskin to teach early reading. The structured programme helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. At the core of the programme is the lively and vigorous teaching of synthetic phonics. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend words for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding).

We have found that by using the Read Write Inc. programme, children experience success from the very beginning of their reading journey. Lively phonic books are then closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and as children re-read stories their fluency increases. The stories include prompts to support thinking out loud and discussions, helping children develop the skills they need to be successful storytellers.

Read Write Inc. lessons are fun and engaging and all staff who deliver the reading sessions are fully trained. The lessons are taught daily and pupils are regularly assessed and grouped to enable appropriate challenge and pace throughout the programme.

Geography

The intention of the Geography Curriculum at Sky is to inspire children’s curiosity and enthusiasm to explore the world that we live in and its people, which aims to ignite a love of learning. We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area so that they can develop a real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special. Geography, by nature, is an investigative subject. Through our teaching, we intend to provoke thought, questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

We want our children to be aware of the environmental, sustainability and humanitarian issues facing our planet and understand that their daily lives and actions have an impact.

We want them to actively engage in conservation work and to become thinking, questioning and responsible people both now and in the future. We want our children to feel a sense of place, belonging and pride in their local community and Cornwall as a whole and to appreciate we are both unique and connected to the wider world. We also aim to provide our children with the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to pose and answer questions confidently, clearly and accurately.

Sky children think and act like geographers and to be inspired by and responsible for the world in which they live.

History

We want to inspire children to want to know more about the past and to think and act as historians. We aim to link progression of knowledge and skills through Enquiries of Learning to enable children to have opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, build an overview of Britain’s past as well as that of the wider world and Cornwall. Our curriculum is designed to ignite our children’s curiosity about the past and allow them to make connections between the past and the present and between local, regional, national and international history.

Additionally, thought has been given to ensuring relevance between the past and current issues such as equality and diversity, protest, advancement in technologies and immigration.

Maths

At Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery we want our children to be enthusiastic and proficient mathematicians, who can apply their learning across a range context and understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life. Through our maths curriculum we aim to develop our children's reasoning and problem-solving skills so that they feel confident to tackle challenges and develop tenacity and think creatively.

Our children are able to explore, understand, and appreciate relationships and patterns in both number and shape in their everyday life. We wish to promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, crosscurricular learning, exploration, and discussion.

We deliver the programme of study that meet the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014. We believe all children can achieve in mathematics and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. The majority of children will be taught the content from their year group only. We aim for children to become true masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in multiple ways.

In teaching this way, we aim to promote confidence, resilience and competence with numbers and the number system through children working hard and pushing themselves to achieve. We wish to provide opportunities for children to challenge themselves, to develop communication skills, independence and co-operation when solving problems in order to take responsibility for their learning. This in turn will equip children with learning behaviours that will support them into their adult life.

Modern Foreign Languages

At Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery we believe that learning a foreign language is important in ensuring our children are exposed to different cultures, traditions and ways of life and to foster curiosity of the world in which they live. We want our children to be able to communicate confidently in another language and to be able to listen and respond to others both in speech and writing. We want our children to feel part of the wider world and to celebrate its diversity and rich heritage.

Personal Social Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) and Relationship, Sex Education (RSE)

At Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery, we believe firmly in the importance of a coherent and well-delivered PSHE curriculum and its positive impact on our children's knowledge, skills and attributes needed to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work. PSHE is a cornerstone of all that we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the ‘whole child’ intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.

Our PSHE curriculum equips our pupils with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, and is central to our Sky curriculum. With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Interweaved through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core values of: Nurturing, Curious, Inspiring, Creative, Active and connected

Physical Education

PE in Kernow Learning schools is all about developing physical literacy and a love of movement at primary level, with a focus on leadership skills, health and wellbeing. This puts Physical Education at the heart of our educational agenda– ensuring young people are well enough to learn and have developed a range of personal competencies that will help them in the classroom and beyond." Kernow Learning Trust is keen to address the negative stereotype of PE being all about prowess in sport and rather reposition it to enhance lifelong skills.

Our PE curriculum is aligned closely to our PSHE curriculum on Health and Well-being and through this we promote the link between physical and mental well-being. We understand the impact that regular physical activity has on both the body and mind and to this end our curriculum aim is to ensure that physical activity becomes an integrated part of our children’s lives, now and in the future.

Our PE curriculum is also closely aligned to our Outdoor and Adventurous Activities programme, ensuring that our children experience a wide range of challenging activities on residential trips in Year 4, 5 and 6 including climbing, kayaking, coasteering, archery, abseiling, mountain biking, trail walking and raft building. Our children learn to take risks and challenge themselves and as a result grow in both physical and mental confidence.

Living in Cornwall, we place great importance on sea safety from EYFS and in the future we aim to take part in Surf and Water safety days such as Hit the Surf and younger children with visits from the RNLI. Our Key Stage 2 children also attend regular swimming lessons at our local pool.

Our PE curriculum is also designed to ensure that there is a balance between individual, partner, small group and team activities as well as developing the role of the referee and spectator. Through this we ensure our children understand the importance of respect, fair-play, cooperation and sportsmanship. We also promote the importance of resilience and personal best.

Religious Education

The principle aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.

Our RE curriculum sits within a larger framework of teaching including PSHE, British Values and SMSC. Our RE curriculum aims to provide children with the knowledge necessary to understand different religions and explore in depth about the people of a religion and how they interpret and live out the teachings of their religion in their everyday lives. To this end our curriculum ensures that children do not stereotype people of different religions but see all people as individuals.

Our RE curriculum also develops our children’s sense of self, belonging and history through the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus 2020-2025Curriculum Kernewek units and encourages our children to explore the big questions about life through thematic units.

Science

Our vision for science at Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery focuses on the core foundation of curiosity for the world around us. We want our children to be excited and naturally curious about the world around them and to foster a sense of awe and wonder. – this connects to our planet, people, place and sustainable living, our global links all based on nature inspired learning. We aim to build upon all pupils’ natural inquisitiveness, instilling a life-long love of science and a high regard for its purpose in the world.

We intend to achieve this by providing all children with a carefully designed coherent curriculum, from their first to final year, aimed at developing the knowledge, scientific skills, scientific enquiry, vocabulary and cultural capital that will help them to succeed in future learning and in life.

We believe our unique curriculum, partnership with Eden Project, ethos and school values, will provide all children, regardless of background, the learning behaviours and key skills needed to access the full potential of our science curriculum and help continue to excite and inspire them, to become global citizens for our future.

At Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery, we intend to implement the national curriculum for science to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future (National Curriculum 2014)
