Our Curriculum Approach

 

 

We are establishing exceptional learning through a learning beyond the classroom and nature inspired curriculum. Sky Primary is a showcase for environmental education, pushing out the classroom walls where learning:

  • Through the outdoors is a change maker - an innovative curriculum that has ‘Global Learning’ at its heart, blended with learning about sustainability
  • Is inspirational and experiential - develops enquiring minds that challenge perceived wisdom and the big issues that face the wider world, leading to improved outcomes for our children academically, morally and socially.
  • Is fully immersive – making sense of the world through direct interaction with the natural environment and with the local community to help children understand the big questions about the world in which they live.

We employ a cross-curricular topic approach to learning.

We want all children at Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery to be excited and motivated to learn, so we aim to inspire children, nurturing a passion for lifelong learning, encouraging curiosity and confidence for everyone.

Learning at Sky covers the requirements of the National Curriculum. Literacy and numeracy is at the heart of everything we do, so that pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Our ‘learning beyond the classroom’ approach ensures our children are offered an exceptional and unique, nature inspired everyday experience at school. Our children also benefit from our unique partnership with the Eden Project.

Our curriculum is enhanced by our commitment to the ‘Harmony approach’, sustainability links to the Good Life Goals, values-based education and, through this, we provide learning experiences which promote confident, independent children who are motivated to make a positive change to our community and planet.

Learning Beyond the Classroom 

Our experience is that children who spend more time outdoors become more active and confident through their connection with nature and the living world which supports them to become curious and resilient learners.

The benefits to children learning outside and creating enquiry-based environments are extensive, below is a list of some of the key benefits but this is not exhaustive:-

  •          Better physical health, growth and development;
  •          Numerous opportunities to strengthen motor skills;
  •          Connection to nature and respect for it;
  •          Promotes creativity and the capacity to learn;
  •          Leads to stronger verbal and social skills;
  •          Increased collaboration, communication, team working, listening, discussion, debates, planning, decision making etc;
  •          Greater opportunities for Scientific exploration & knowledge;
  •          Stimulates senses;
  •          Refining fine motor skills;
  •          Improves pupil behaviour and promotes positive attitudes to learning;
  •          Improves mental health and emotional development;
  •          Promotes social inclusion;

 

 

Character Education

Character Education at Sky Primary is premised upon two ideas: 

First, that character is both ‘taught’ and ‘caught’.  

Taught because pupils need to learn directly about character strengths and virtues, and to be given opportunities to practise them. Caught because pupils need to be exposed to the concepts and language of character throughout their experience of school. This will be delivered through the ethos of the school, by our teachers and other adults in school acting as role models, by empowering children to be role models and recognising them publicly as such, and by providing enabling enrichment activities so that character development is emphasised.  

The second idea is that there are four core dimensions to character: intellectual, performance, moral and civic. These are demonstrated in the diagram below: 

A complete character education seeks to develop pupils along all four dimensions, and in this broad conception character encompasses academic achievement as a route to the development of intellectual character strength. 

As such, our curriculum will be infused with opportunities for children to develop children’s character strengths and virtues together with assemblies and taught sessions on virtues outlined above, the discrete and embedded learning will provide our children with the knowledge, language and moral exemplars to help them continue strengthening the virtues in their own lives.  

The Six Benchmarks of Character Education set out by the DfE is used to identify what opportunities are already in place at Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery, and also used as a toolkit to help us further develop our practise in this area.   

Good Life Goals

The Good Life Goals help us live sustainably with a global focus so that we look after each other and care for our planet. They are connected to every part of our curriculum.
